For the life of me I cannot make a Jack Kirby homage sketch without doing a poor imitation of his technique. The unbridled energy is infectious in the most refreshing way. I almost didn’t do the WakeUpAndDraw challenge today, thinking I had just too much on my plate, but then I realized that the graphic novel I’ve been working on borrows steals some of his visual language directly, I realized it would be unconscionable to not do something.

The first teaser to offer a clue what this comic might be about! Above are the inks and below the color by Matthew Bogart who is helping me color this book to meet the deadline. I love the warm morning light he brought to this panel. It’s delicious! (And probably more delicious than the liquid breakfast these poor children are drinking!)
I’ve never cared for the term “Sketch Dump” which may be why I’ve never done one on this blog, but I wanted to wrap up this year with a look back at some of my sketches, and with the hope that a little reflection will help me set sail on a productive drawing year. I have no idea how my work is perceived by others, but to me it sometimes feels like I’ve got different drawing brains that kick into gear depending on the subject. I’m hoping to get a little more focused in the coming year. We’ll see… I know it’s important to step out of your comfort zone to keep developing, too. I went for some variety here, so I hope you find something that strikes your fancy. Happy New Year!
